Homework
Children in third and fourth grade can be asked to spend up to 40 minutes Monday through Thursday on homework. The homework is designed to be a reinforcement of what is being taught in class, as well as, being an instrument for teaching responsibility and accountability. Therefore, students will be responsible for copying the daily homework assignment(s) onto (a homework contract for third grade) and a (homework planner book for fourth grade). Children need to be sure they have the necessary materials for doing the assigned work each day. I will ask for their homework contracts and planners along with their completed assignments at the beginning of each school day. In addition to the assigned homework, a student’s unfinished class work may occasionally be sent home for homework. I certainly understand when circumstances arise which make it impossible or very difficult to complete homework. Should this circumstance happen to you, please write me a note or initial the homework item that couldn’t be completed on the homework contract otherwise, I will expect to see all homework returned to school.

All homework is grade level appropriate and not meant to be an avenue for advanced curriculum. My philosophy on homework is to work hard with the students in class and keep homework to a minimum manageable amount. I encourage families that want more quantity or challenge to meet those needs through personal reading. I will review all homework and record each child’s effort weekly. Some homework will be self corrected by your child in class. Only homework requiring a second look by you will be returned.

About Homework Folders and Procedures:

Each child is given a homework folder or binder that will come home every day (Monday through Thursday). They should be returned every school day morning. I will hold the students responsible for the return of their work, as well as, the quality of their effort towards their work.

There is  also a homework / behavior contract sheet inside. With this form, parents will be able to track their child’s homework and keep tabs on their classroom behavior by looking at the color their behavior clip is on each day. Our clip color system is as follows:

Green ......... They are doing great
Yellow.......... They are given cautionary warning (s)
Red.............. They will receive a consequence - a note home - possible visit to the principal

Students begin each day on the color green. If asked to move a clip, they always have the opportunity to earn it back to green by the end of the day.

It is very important that parents help their child by making them responsible for the use and care of this folder, as well as, all the work it contains. Parents can help by:

Setting up some good homework habits. Experts say that if we consistently do something for 21 days it will probably become a habit. Therefore, talk with your child and decide on some good homework habits to work toward.

Let your child do the homework. Homework builds self discipline, independence, responsibility, time management and can often make the difference between mastering a subject and just getting by.

Be sure to go over all returned work in the folder. In third grade, it is most beneficial for students to self correct their work whenever possible. This allows for immediate feedback and self correction. Therefore you will see much work with student self correcting marks, however, these items are always monitored and reviewed by me. Other work will be corrected and graded by me only, but look for comments to go over with your child. Any work that receives a percentage mark is recorded for a grade.

Be sure to remove all returned papers and flyers from the folder daily. This helps keep your child organized and limits confusion over what work is to be turned in to class and what is to be kept at home.
